Tele-Health FAQs
In order to make your first video chat go smoothly, please review these questions and answers ahead of time.
What do I need to conduct a video chat?
Most smart phones with a microphone and camera (with selfie-mode) will work fine.
If you don't have a smart phone, you can also use a laptop with a camera and microphone.
Do I need to download a special app?
No. The video chat takes place on a secure web page on your device's browser. The chat works best on Safari and Chrome browsers. If your device's default browser is not Safari or Chrome, you may have to cut and paste the link into one of those browsers.
How do I access this video chat?
At your appointment time, you will receive a text (or email) with a link. Because text messaging is almost instantaneous, this is preferred when using a smart phone. However, if you don't text, we can email the link (although, as we know, there may be a delay in receiving an email). If you are using a laptop for your video chat, we will have to email you the link.
The text will probably arrive from an unfamiliar number (maybe with an 844 area code). If you receive an email, it will come from "Updox" (the company supplying the video chat platform). Both the text number and the Updox email address are 'do not reply' (i.e. if you send a message to them, no none will reply).
Overview on Video Chat.
Why is my browser asking me to allow use of my microphone and camera?
For security reasons, web sites do not have default permissions to access these capabilities on your phone or laptop. However, in order to conduct a video chat, you need to grant these permissions. Please click "yes" or "allow" when asked. You will have to do this twice (once for microphone, once for camera/video).
Will the video chat be recorded?
No.
Why don't you use Skype or something similar?
Physicians must comply with HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act) which requires a higher level of security to ensure patient privacy. The Updox video platform is HIPPA-compliant.
